NON ENTANGLING FADS

FADs no enmallantes

INPESCA, a company committed to the environment, publicly assumes that will use exclusively Non - Entangling Fish Aggregating Devices (NEFs).

Scientific studies show that FADs, when built with materials such as used old netting no properly accommodated, can entangle vulnerable species such as sharks or turtles.

In order to solve this problem, INPESCA and OPAGAC collaborated and follow collaborating in the research to minimize the possible  impact of our activity, and as part of the different projects on the "Code of good practices for responsible fishing " signed by all Spanish shipowners in February 2012, our policy is addressed to use only non-entangling FADs and to investigate using biodegradable raw materials, following recommendation 3.5 that ISSF adopted.

So, NEFADs will be deployed as follows:

  1. If netting is used, it is only of small mesh (less than 7 cm. stretched mesh).
  2. If the raft is covered, it should generally be with shade cloth or canvas. If small mesh netting is used, it must be tightly wrapped around the raft with no loose netting hanging from it.
  3. The subsurface (hanging) structure should generally be made with ropes, canvas, nylon sheets or other non-entangling materials. If netting is used, it must be tightly tied into bundles ("sausages"), or in a panel of net of small mesh it will be weighted so as to keep it taut.

Compañía Internacional de Pesca y Derivados, S.A. (INPESCA) will also strive to remove any entangling FADs it encounters at sea, and bring them to port for disposal.

Compañía Internacional de Pesca y Derivados, S.A. (INPESCA) will also strive to use as much as possible biodegradable materials in the construction of new NEFADs.
